What you'll need

  • A standard armchair (46 cm seat height)
  • A clear 3-meter walking path
  • A measuring tape or pre-marked line
  • Flat, non-slip flooring

Protocol

  1. 1Use a standard armchair (seat height ~46 cm, with armrests) placed against a wall.
  2. 2Mark a line on the floor 3 meters from the front of the chair (or 2.44 m for the alternate).
  3. 3Sit well back in the chair, feet flat on the floor, back against the chair back.
  4. 4When you press Start, rise from the chair, walk at your normal, comfortable pace to the line.
  5. 5Turn around, walk back to the chair, and sit down.
  6. 6Press Stop the moment your bottom fully touches the seat.
  7. 7Do 3 attempts. Rest 1 minute between. The best (fastest) time counts.
  8. 8You may use your usual walking aid if you have one β€” note it for context.

Safety notes

  • β€’ Have a spotter on your first attempt β€” this test involves turning on your feet.
  • β€’ If you feel unsteady, stop and use your walking aid.
  • β€’ Skip if you currently have foot/ankle fracture or have been advised not to weight-bear.
  • β€’ After total joint replacement: test only with your physiotherapist's clearance.

3 m is the Podsiadlo 1991 standard. 2.44 m is the Shumway-Cook variant.
