What you'll need

  • A firm, level floor
  • A wall or chair nearby for safety
  • Bare feet or flat shoes
  • A phone or watch (this timer will do)

Protocol

  1. 1Stand on a firm, flat surface next to a wall or stable object you can catch if needed β€” but do not use it during the test.
  2. 2Place your hands on your hips.
  3. 3Lift one foot off the ground to a comfortable height (roughly the height of the opposite calf).
  4. 4Press the Start button when you lift your foot.
  5. 5Hold the position as long as you can without moving the standing foot, putting the lifted foot down, or touching the wall.
  6. 6Press Stop the moment you lose balance. The timer captures your held time.
  7. 7Repeat for the other side, then retake both sides with eyes closed.

Safety notes

  • β€’ Have something to grab for safety β€” but do not use it during the test.
  • β€’ Stop immediately if you feel dizzy or unsteady.
  • β€’ Skip the eyes-closed test if you fall easily.
  • β€’ Post-ankle-surgery patients should only test after physio clearance.
