Knee-to-Wall Test

What you'll need

  • A flat wall
  • A hard floor (no carpet or rug)
  • Bare feet
  • A ruler or measuring tape
  • Optional: a second person to check your heel

Protocol

  1. 1Stand barefoot facing a wall, both feet pointing straight forward.
  2. 2Place your test foot so the big toe is close to (but not touching) the wall.
  3. 3Slide the foot back slightly. Keep the heel flat on the floor the entire test.
  4. 4Bend your knee forward, attempting to touch the wall with your kneecap while keeping your heel planted.
  5. 5If the knee touches the wall with ease, slide the foot further back and re-test.
  6. 6Stop at the position where your knee just touches the wall without the heel lifting.
  7. 7Measure the distance from your big toe to the wall. This is your KTW value for that side.
  8. 8Repeat for the other side.

Safety notes

  • β€’ Stop if you feel sharp pain in the ankle, knee, or calf.
  • β€’ Skip if you have an acute ankle injury β€” let it heal first.
  • β€’ A post-surgical ankle should only be tested with physio clearance.
